David is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Roper St. Francis Healthcare (RSFH). RSFH is the South Carolina Lowcountry’s only private, not-for-profit hospital and health care system.

Roper Hospital was founded in 1850 as the first community hospital in the Carolinas. Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital first opened its doors in 1882 as St. Francis Xavier Infirmary, the first Catholic hospital in South Carolina. On August 1, 1998, the two hospitals came together to form Roper St. Francis Healthcare. Together, the hospitals represent more than 150 years of providing high quality, personalized healthcare.

The 657-bed system consists of 90 facilities and services in seven counties. Member hospitals include Roper Hospital (401 beds), Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital (204 beds) and Roper Rehabilitation Hospital (52 beds) as well as off-campus locations providing 24-hour emergency care, diagnostic services including laboratory and imaging, home health services and outpatient surgery as well as a physician network offering primary and specialty care. Mount Pleasant Hospital (85 beds) is currently under construction and will open in November 2010. Plans to build a new hospital in Berkeley County are also in progress.

With more than 4,800 employees, RSFH is Charleston’s largest non-governmental, private employer. Its medical staff includes nearly 800 physicians representing every medical specialty.

RSFH is proud to be the market share leader and preferred health care provider for people living in the greater Charleston metro area. Ranked #46 among the Top 100 Integrated Health Networks in the nation, Roper St. Francis recently earned 71 National Awards recognizing high levels of patient, physician and employee satisfaction.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare has a clear mission: Healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence. In 2009, the organization contributed more than 58,015 hours of staff time and $29.6 million to benefit the community, serving nearly 175,000 community residents.

David’s career as a hospital executive started over 35 years ago. Prior to assuming his duties in Charleston, SC, he served as President/CEO of Memorial Medical Center, a two-hospital system in New Orleans. Prior to that, he served as CEO of University Health Partners, a multihospital system in Oklahoma City, OK, which includes Oklahoma’s largest academic medical center, known as Oklahoma University Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Oklahoma.

David holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Memphis, a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the South Carolina Hospital Association and is Immediate Past Chair for Trident United Way.

David and his wife Pamela reside on James Island, SC and have three children and two grandchildren.
